Why Is My Website Not Showing Up on Google?

If you’ve searched for your own business on Google and can’t find your website, you’re not alone — and you’re right to be concerned. There are several common reasons why a website may not appear in Google search results, and most of them are fixable.

Your Website Is Brand New

If your website was launched recently, Google may simply not have found it yet. Google’s web crawler (called Googlebot) needs to discover, crawl, and index your site before it appears in search results. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. You can speed this up by submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console.

You’ve Been Accidentally Blocked from Google

This is more common than you’d think. A single line of code — ‘noindex’ in your page’s meta tags, or ‘Disallow’ in your robots.txt file — can prevent Google from indexing your entire website. Check your robots.txt file by going to yourwebsite.co.nz/robots.txt. In Google Search Console, use the URL Inspection tool to check if your pages are indexed.

Your Website Has a Manual Penalty

If your site has previously been penalised by Google for spammy backlinks, duplicate content, or other policy violations, it may be suppressed or completely removed from search results. Check the ‘Manual Actions’ section in Google Search Console to see if any penalties have been applied.

Your Website Isn’t Ranking for the Right Terms

You might be indexed but simply not ranking for the keywords you’re searching for. Try searching for your exact business name first. If that appears, your site is indexed — you just need to work on ranking for broader search terms related to your services.

Technical Issues Are Preventing Indexing

Crawl errors, redirect loops, broken internal links, or a slow page speed can all prevent Google from fully indexing your site. Use Google Search Console’s Coverage report to identify any pages that have errors. Fix crawl errors promptly — every unindexed page is a missed ranking opportunity.

Your Site Lacks Quality Content and Backlinks

Even if your site is indexed, it won’t rank well without content that matches search intent and at least some external links pointing to it. If your site is just a few pages with minimal text, Google has little to rank. Start building content that genuinely helps your target audience.

How to Check Right Now

Type ‘site:yourwebsite.co.nz’ into Google (without quotes, replacing with your actual domain). If results appear, your site is indexed. If nothing shows up, your site is likely blocked or hasn’t been crawled yet. Submit your sitemap via Google Search Console and request indexing for your key pages.
